Darrell Barker, P.E.
Vice President, Extreme Loads and STructural Risk
Darrell Barker's professional experience includes 27 years of blast resistant design and construction. He is a recognized industry leader and speaks extensively to industry groups and government agencies, including the National Research Council and the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He has published more than 30 papers on explosion effects research and development, as well as practical approaches to protection of structures against explosion hazards. Darrell is a founding member of the Protective Glazing Council, which provides technical information to government agencies in the area of glazing hazard protection. He is an active participant in industry committees writing guidelines, handbooks and standards for blast resistant construction.
Darrell has performed hazard analyses for government and commercial clients to quantify risks resulting from accidental explosions and terrorist explosive devices. He has conducted terrorist threat assessments of more than 200 buildings for government agencies across the country, including key facilities in the National Capitol region. He has developed innovative solutions to protect buildings against these threats, including wall strengthening and blast resistant glazing for designated historical structures.
A 1983 graduate of the University of Arkansas, Darrell is a member of the Arkansas Academy of Civil Engineering. In his current position with ABS Consulting, he manages a group specializing in the assessment and mitigation of seismic, wind and blast hazards.
