Nuclear Engineering

Engineering substantiation services are provided by experienced structural and mechanical engineers with considerable experience of the requirements of modern nuclear safety cases.  We have a strong culture of practical engineering and design experience together with excellent analytical capabilities.

All staff members have experience of working in multidisciplinary engineering teams and many have directly relevant site experience as well as being classified radiation workers.

Drawing on a wide range of disciplines from our experienced engineering staff allows us to provide technical assistance in many areas of nuclear engineering including:

  • Impact, shock and blast assessments
  • Natural hazard assessments including seismic, wind, snow and flood
  • Thermal and heat transfer assessments
  • Advanced analysis using ANSYS, ABAQUS, DYNA-3D and STAAD
  • Walkdown techniques and database methods including structural surveys of safety-related structures
  • Civil, structural and mechanical design assessment
  • Mechanical handling
  • Design and retrofit guidance
  • Life extension/change of use studies
  • Engineering in support of safety cases
  • Structural integrity justifications
  • Independent technical assessment/peer review

Nuclear Engineering

In addition to the above technical areas, we have considerable experience in the creation of Design Substantiation Reports (DSRs, DARs, etc.) to demonstrate that physical plant and equipment satisfy the assumptions of the safety case.

This is performed using deterministic safety arguments supported where appropriate with engineering calculations. For new designs, the DSR Author can act as Design-Safety Manager, balancing safety objectives with ALARP engineering designs. For existing plant, directed assessments are produced to identify the performance of plant and structures, and identify where appropriate potential ALARP improvements.

Our clients include:

AWE, BNFL, British Energy, Magnox Electric, Rolls Royce Power Engineering, Urenco, DML, BAe Systems, Stothert &  Pitt, NIS, RTS, Butterley Engineering.
