Mr. Donald K. Lorenzo, Director of ABS Consulting Training Services, has more than 30 years of experience in systems design and analysis work for the process industries. He is an expert in applying incident investigation techniques to discover the root causes of safety, environmental, and economic losses. Mr. Lorenzo received both his bachelor's degree (summa cum laude) and master's degree in nuclear engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is currently a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Tennessee.
Since joining ABS Consulting (formerly JBF Associates, Inc.) in 1983, Mr. Lorenzo has led dozens of incident investigations for a wide variety of batch and continuous processes in the petroleum, chemical, manufacturing, mining, and nuclear industries. He recently participated in the Baker Panel investigations following a major refinery accident in Texas City.
In addition to teaching incident investigation techniques to hundreds of engineering and operations personnel, Mr. Lorenzo also teaches courses in human reliability analysis. He is a co-author of two documents published by the Chemical Manufacturers Association (now the American Chemistry Council): A Manager's Guide to Quantitative Risk Assessment and A Manager's Guide to Human Reliability Analysis. He is also a co-author of Guidelines for Hazard Evaluation Procedures, Second Edition with Worked Examples and Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety (both published by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' Center for Chemical Process Safety). He is also a co-author of the Root Cause Analysis Handbook, Third Edition, published by Rothstein Associates Inc.
Before joining ABS Consulting, Mr. Lorenzo was a development engineer for Union Carbide Corporation.
