Capesize Bulk Carriers Monitored
ABS Consulting Approved by RightShip as Condition Assessment Program Provider

July 9, 2007

Houston, TX ABS Consulting has been approved by leading ship vetting specialist RightShip to act as a recognized supplier to conduct Condition Assessment Programs (CAPs) for bulk carriers.

Worldwide, charterers and shippers look to the RightShip program for transparency of data in order to identify and assess the condition of a ship, prior to fixing, with the goal of potentially avoiding substandard vessels. Port State Control authorities, insurers, terminal operators and ship owners are also RightShip users. The organization maintains a database of 50 factors covering structural integrity and quality of crewing and management, for over 50,000 dry bulk, petroleum, gas and liner vessels.

RightShip is currently focused on the vessel acceptance criteria for capesize (90,000 and above dwt) bulk carriers. "Many cape owners have maintained their vessels to a high standard and these vessels, subject to a successful RightShip-CAP review, should be fit to trade to 30 years old," says Captain Warwick Norman, CEO, Rightship.

The CAP program available from ABS Consulting provides capesize bulk carrier owners with the information needed to satisfy the RightShip acceptance criteria. Issues such as a 2-D fatigue analysis and the condition of the hull structure, coatings, machinery and deck equipment are addressed by the program.

"Owners needing CAP for RightShip vetting purposes can now use our proven CAP program," says Thomas M. Nolan, Vice President, Marine Services, ABS Consulting.  "We have many years of experience and have conducted CAP surveys on hundreds of vessels, including both tankers and bulk carriers."

Nolan says a growing number of bulk carrier owners and operators have approached ABS Consulting seeking CAP assessments of their vessels in response to increasingly stringent standards being imposed by the big bulk commodity charterers.

"Although the requirement for CAPs within the tanker sector is now well established," he notes, "the bulk carrier owners are beginning to understand the commercial advantages of being able to offer a vessel that has been independently assessed as meeting the highest CAP rating."

"The process is very straightforward," Nolan adds. "We have a global team of surveyors able to undertake the necessary inspections and a team of experienced engineers who use the unique ABS SafeHull system for the fatigue analysis and remaining fatigue life evaluation."
