J. S. (Steve) Arendt
Vice President, North America Process Industries
Steve Arendt has 30 years experience in chemical process safety and risk management and has performed hundreds of safety analyses, risk assessments, audits, and accident investigations on a variety of oil, gas, chemical, and related industry processes. In 2006, Steve led technical reviews for the BP Baker Panel evaluation of PSM effectiveness, process safety culture, and corporate oversight of BP's five U.S. refineries. Since then, Steve had led more than 20 projects evaluating process safety culture for oil and gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, and consumer products companies. He has also provided process safety culture overview training to more than 70 CEOs, senior executives, and Board members.
He is a work group member for the Center for Offshore Safety SEMS Audit team, and has provided SEMS auditor training for BSEE inspectors. Steve has conducted hundreds of RP 75/PSM audits, incident investigations, and best practice reviews, including more than 20 offshore facilities.
Steve is a widely published author, having over 50 articles, guides, and books to his credit on PSM and risk management topics, including the CCPS Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety and ACC's Process Safety Resource Guide. Since 1989, Steve has worked with ACC and other industry groups to develop technical positions dealing with OSHA and EPA process safety regulations. He has conducted industry surveys and led national workshops on PSM best practices.
Steve was awarded the 2006 Merit Award from the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center, recognizing significant contributions to the advancement of education, research, and service activities related to process safety concepts and/or technologies. In 2007, he was named as a Center for Chemical Process Safety Fellow, honoring his many years and contributions to process safety and willingness to share expertise in the promotion of process safety. Steve holds a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Tennessee in 1977 and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Tennessee.
