Storage Tanks: The Hidden Threat Webinar Series

Imagine it's late at night and a maintenance crew is finishing repairs on a vent system compressor on a large waste storage tank. Upon compressor startup there is an explosion, fatalities and significant plant losses - and as a result new safety regulations are developed.

In 2005, in Hemel Hempstead, England, an on-site team experienced a nightmare just like this when both a level gauge failure and high level switch failure lead to a petro tank overflow - complete with explosions, major fires, injuries and nearly £1 billion in damages - in a disaster we have come to know as the Buncefield explosion.

Storage tanks and tank farms often represent some of the most significant hazards at a facility. In the upcoming three webinars, we will review the lessons learned from the Buncefield accident (applicable to all tank farms), illustrate an effective way to model a typical storage tank accident scenario and demonstrate how to efficiently show ALARP for major accident hazards.
