Storage Tanks: The Hidden Threat Webinar Series

Imagine it's late at night and a maintenance crew is finishing repairs on a vent system compressor on a large waste storage tank. Upon compressor startup there is an explosion, fatalities and significant plant losses - and as a result new safety regulations are developed.

In 2005, in Hemel Hempstead, England, an on-site team experienced a nightmare just like this when both a level gauge failure and high level switch failure lead to a petro tank overflow - complete with explosions, major fires, injuries and nearly £1 billion in damages - in a disaster we have come to know as the Buncefield explosion.

Storage tanks and tank farms often represent some of the most significant hazards at a facility. In the upcoming three webinars, we will review the lessons learned from the Buncefield accident (applicable to all tank farms), illustrate an effective way to model a typical storage tank accident scenario and demonstrate how to efficiently show ALARP for major accident hazards.

Join us for this upcoming webinar series by registering through the links below. These sessions will last 45 minutes and will include time for interactive questions and answers.

Buncefield Revisited: Lessons Learned, Progress Made

Buncefield Revisited Webinar

October 8, 2013
Video Archive

In this webinar, we will review the major root causes of the Buncefield incident, key lessons "re-learned" in controlling major accident hazards, progress made in improving both the safety and environmental protection
and the safety leadership in industry.

What You Will Learn:

  • The root causes of the Buncefield incident
  • Generic causes of major accidents
  • Best practices for controlling/lowering risk
  • Programmatic "fixes" for broad sets of accident hazards
  • Management "fixes" for major accident hazards

Storage Tank Overfill Scenarios: Using the BowTie Method to Manage Risk

Storage Tank Overfill Scenarios Webinar

October 22, 2013
Video Archive

While often a relatively quiet part of plant operations, tanks and tank farms often represent some of the largest plant risks. In this webinar, we will demonstrate how to effectively create and analyze BowTies, with a particular focus on a tank overfill scenario.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to model an accident scenario using the BowTie method
  • How to analyze a BowTie
  • Typical uses of a BowTie for management of major accident hazards

Hazard Prevention: Using BowTie Thesis to Demonstrate ALARP Efficiently

Hazard Prevention Webinar

November 5, 2013
14:00 GMT, 8:00 am CST
Video Archive

The BowTie analysis tool provides an efficient and effective way to portray and analyze major accident hazards at a facility. In this webinar, we will illustrate how to demonstrate ALARP using the BowTie method and how to efficiently calculate ALARP for numerous accident scenarios using BowTie Thesis.

What You Will Learn:

  • How BowTies can be the core of the process safety management system
  • How to demonstrate ALARP with a BowTie
  • Methods to perform a cost/benefit analysis
  • Efficient evaluation of multiple accident scenarios
